Organizations team up to prevent beach erosion

St. Petersburg, Florida -- The Florida Aquarium has teamed up with Pinellas County, the City of St. Pete Beach, the Sirata Beach Resort and Crappy Bills to prevent beach erosion by organizing a large-scale sea oat planting project on St. Pete Beach.

There will be over 150 volunteers from local organizations planting sea oats to help form and maintain sand dunes, critical to controlling beach erosion.

The event will take place on Saturday, June 29 at 8:00 a.m. People who want to participate should meet at Crabby Bills Restaurant at 5000 Gulf Blvd in St. Pete Beach. 

St. Pete mayor unveils new "828 Alliance"

St. Petersburg, Florida --  Mayor Bill Foster has convened a task force of city leaders determined to unify St. Petersburg around the future of the waterfront. 

The 828 Alliance, is comprised of Lens supporters and opponents, downtown organizations, members of the city's marine science community, and others. The alliance is based on two basic premises: St. Petersburg is passionate in the future of the St. Petersburg waterfront and that NOT having a Pier in the near future of the city is NOT an option.

Man gets 15 years for pregnant girlfriend's death

CLEARWATER, Florida (AP) - A St. Petersburg man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for fatally shooting his pregnant girlfriend.

A Pinellas County judge sentenced 22-year-old Larry Reed on Monday. He was convicted of manslaughter in May.

"I went out for a jog and ended up storm chasing," Steve Zebrowski tweeted of the waterspout, which went over land in Vinoy Park.

Family, dog rescued on boat during tornado warning

St. Petersburg, Florida-- Coast Guard crewmembers rescued five people and a dog around the time of Tuesday night's tornado warning after their boat stopped working near the Sunshine Skyway Bridge.
