Pier Aquarium re-stocks fish before tonight's Holiday stroll

Saint Petersburg, FL - New fish are moving into The Pier Aquarium's Big Tube aquarium today, marked by an official "restocking" ceremony that took place at 1:00 p.m. this afternoon, with Curator of Exhibits Butch Ringelspaugh rigged onto high scaffolding to deliver a few fish into the 20-ft. tall tank.

The much anticipated event is the follow-up to an electrical mishap in early August that cut off the electricity to "the Big Tube," the largest of three circular tube aquariums in The Pier's first floor lobby, that resulted in the loss of the animals. The 20-ft. tall tank had about 35 large fish, many considered "showstoppers."

"This system, which was installed by an electrician who donated his time, gives us peace of mind so what happened this summer doesn't happen again," Ringelspaugh said. As curator, he maintains the equipment and set-up of the 17 tanks at The Pier Aquarium with his aquarist staff.

During the Pier's Holiday Stroll, which will follow the re-stocking, you can enjoy the following activities along with cookies, cider, and Santa:

1:00 p.m. - Big Tube Fish Restock by The Pier Aquarium
1:00-4:00 p.m. - "Bedazzled" performs in the Courtyard by the Bay with holiday music
2:00-5:00 p.m. - Visit Santa Claus next to the Christmas Tree and tell him what YOU want for Christmas.  The first 100 children will receive a special gift from Santa.
5:00 p.m. - Drawing for the $1,000 in presents!
5:15-6:00 p.m. - "That's Dancing!" Tap performance from Bonnie Gray Productions
