Paid legal internship for high school students

Clearwater, Florida -- Do you know a high school student who might be more motivated to attend college or do better in school if they could experience a quality mentor relationship this summer?

The Clearwater Bar Association is pleased to announce the 2013 Student Legal Intern Program. To qualify, students must live in or attend school in north Pinellas County and have completed 9th grade but not yet graduated from high school.

The six-week program is designed to achieve these goals: to provide a valuable work experience; to further understanding of the law; and to provide a mentor relationship. Clearwater Bar members, Clearwater Bar Foundation and The Florida Bar Local Government Law Section are funding the program, and the interns will be hosted by local attorneys, judges, law firms and legal departments.

The paid internships will run from June 10 to July 19, 2013. Interns will perform numerous duties for their employers as they learn about the inner workings of law offices, legal departments, and the judicial system. The duties will be determined by the mentor/employer and therefore may vary from office to office.

To be considered, students must submit by May 10 an application, a school transcript, two letters of recommendation and prepare an essay: “Tell us why this internship is an important opportunity for you.” Qualifying applicants will be interviewed the week of May 20. Applicants who would benefit the most from this experience will be given top priority regardless of GPA.

Interns will also attend an orientation and job skills workshops which will prepare them for what is expected of them and what they can expect and will focus on issues such as confidentiality, professionalism, punctuality, attention to detail, and appearance.
