Proposed Changes to Coral Reef on St. Pete Beach

Gulfport, Florida -- The Coral Reef hotel on St. Pete Beach wants to grow and change. At a July meeting in Pass-a-Grille, 5800 Gulf Holdings LLC held a public meeting to present its plans for improvement.

Here's the bare facts from the proposal:

• Height: Roughly 20% of the Coral Reef will reach the 146 foot height limit, with most of the hotel under 100 feet. The commissioner who represents the voters in District Three, Marvin Shavlan, pointed out that by comparison, "the buildings on St. Petersburg's Beach Drive are at approximately 300 feet, or more than double the maximum allowable height in St. Pete Beach's Large Hotel District."
• Additional public beach access on south side of the hotel
• Sidewalk (10 feet wide) will face Gulf Boulevard
• Low-rise retail space beyond sidewalk
• Setbacks: the hotel will sit on the far west end of the property, set back from Gulf Boulevard
