Clearwater Harbor Marina wins national award

Clearwater Harbor Marina wins national award

Clearwater, Florida - BoatUS, the Boat Owners Association of The United States, has given Clearwater its top award for 2010.

"For its ability to bring much needed boating access that includes 126 permanent slips, over 1500-feet of 'side-tie' docks for overnight stays and 650-feet of free 'side-tie' dockage for day use, the City of Clearwater is honored with a 2010 BoatUS Recreational Boating Access Award," the organization stated.

The group created the award in 2007 to mark successes in protecting water access at a time when the number of marina slips, service yards and boat launching areas were on the decline.

BoatUS noted the marina not only includes facilities for mariners but also has public promenade, boardwalk and fishing pier designed to draw visitors and residents to the waterfront area near Coachman Park.

Tourism industry: "Snow better time to visit Florida!"

Tourism industry: "Snow better time to visit Florida!"

PINELLAS COUNTY, Florida - Taking advantage of a brutal winter in the Northeast, "Visit St. Pete/Clearwater" is preparing to blitz blizzard-ravaged New York City with beach-themed ads over the next few months.

The St. Petersburg/Clearwater Area Convention & Visitors Bureau is planning $700,000 worth of ads for New York subways, elevators, newspapers, buses, television stations, magazines, and airports.

Of the 6 million overnight visitors to Pinellas Co. each year, 20 percent come from the Northeast, more than any other region.  Their estimated direct economic impact is over $1 billion.

"(When) you've already had three years worth of snow dumped on your city," said David Downing with the visitors bureau, "you're looking for a way out."
