Government, environmentalists: Gulf floor oil is concerning

Government, environmentalists: Gulf floor oil is concerning

NEW ORLEANS - A federal report released on Friday, Dec. 17, expresses concern over oil from BP's spill being lodged in the sediment of the Gulf of Mexico at levels that could threaten the water's resident plants and animals. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is the agency behind the report's research, which is based on ongoing, comprehensive monitoring of the water, coast, and sediments in the Gulf.

Tampa Bay area beaches and other coastal communities could be affected by the threats to plant and animal life, but the primary evidence of the contamination is limited to the few locations in the Gulf that are close to BP's offshore Macondo well, according to officials.
