Tarpon Springs "Sponger" mascot in national contest

Tarpon Springs, Florida -- A sponger may not seem like an odd choice for a mascot in a city like Tarpon Springs--where sponge diving goes back for generations.  But outside the city, it's unique.  And that uniqueness could help the Spongers win a national contest.

10 News partner USA Today High School Sports is looking for America's top high school mascot.  The staff picked 255 of the nation's most unique high school mascots (five per state + Washington, D.C.)  The winner will be chosen through a series of rounds--beginning with a state competition that ends March 5th.  The 51 state winners will advance to round two where they will be divided among regions, then the six regional winners will compete for the national title.

The Tarpon Springs High School Spongers are up against four competitors: the Cornerstone Charter Academy Fighting Ducks from Orlando, the Key West Conchs, the Lakeland Dreadnaughts and the Laurel Hill Hoboes.

The nation winner receives $2000 for its athletic department. Second place gets $1000, third ($500), fourth ($250), and fifth ($100.)
