Coast Guard Clearwater in top videos of 2010

Clearwater, Florida - Coast Guard crews from the Air Station and Port Security Unit in Clearwater are being showcased in three of the top 11 USCG videos for 2010.

The videos "highlight the dynamic and challenging environment our men and women operate in daily, as well as during major response operations such as the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and the Operation Unified Response to assist the people of Haiti after the earthquake," said Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Bob Papp.

One video shows crews from Air Station Clearwater rescuing an injured 64 year old woman and her friend from their disabled 65-foot sailboat about 198 miles west of St. Petersburg on Sept. 1.

Another shows two men rescued from the water after their boat overturned about 30 miles west of Egmont key on Aug. 28th.

A third shows crewmembers bringing relief supplies, including medicines, to an orphanage in Port-Au-Prince Feb. 3rd, after a major earthquake there.

Seminole, FL - Bicycle Outfitters is hosting the "Christmas Lights Ride" through the Lake Park Estates neighborhood, located north of Bryan Dairy Rd. in Seminole, tonight at 8:00 p.m. There will be a hot chocolate stop along the route, plenty of festive Christmas lights, and even caroling at the community event.

Participants will gather with their bikes at Osceola High School, 9751 98th St. North.

Pinellas Park, FL - Approximately 80 members of the 53rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team will return home to Florida today after a nearly year-long deployment to Iraq and Kuwait.

The soldiers spent the past 5-7 days conducting demobilization activities at Fort Stewart, Ga., and will return to their families in time for the holidays. The soldiers are expected to return to various armories throughout the State of Florida.

Locally-based military men and women will be returning at 5:30 p.m. to 2801 Grand Ave. in Pinellas Park.

Tarpon Springs, FL - Today is the last day of Santa's week-long tour through town to visit the community firemen in Tarpon Springs, so mark your calendars for a holiday visit from St. Nick and local firefighters.

Tonight's route will start at 6:30 p.m. and take the tour through areas south of Live Oak Street to Tarpon Avenue and east of Disston Avenue to Richard Ervin Parkway including: Publix Plaza, River Village Mobile Home Park, Paradise Lake Mobile Home Park, and Sail Harbor.

The caravan will spread holiday cheer as firefighters drive an antique fire truck throughout the streets, complete with holiday music, festive lights, and of course waves and shouts from Santa Claus himself!

Tradewinds hosts Battle of the Bands pep rally for bowl game

Saint Pete Beach, FL - In preparation for the Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl in Saint Petersburg tomorrow, Tradewinds Island Grand Resort is hosting a Battle of the Bands pep rally to showcase the marching bands of each of the competing schools this afternoon and pump up the team spirit before the big game.

This year's bowl game, formerly known as The St. Petersburg Bowl, will feature a match-up of the Louisville Cardinals and Southern Miss Golden Eagles. The respective bands from each college will go head-to-head themselves in the beach side concert battle and food-eating contest.

Cheerleader tug of war, an inflatable bounce house and boxing ring, and assorted refreshments will also please crowds at the tailgate on the sand.

The event will run from 2:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. and is open to the public.

Sheriff invites public to meeting at Pinellas Safe Harbor homeless facility

Pinellas County, FL - Pinellas County Sheriff Jim Coats is inviting residents, business owners and anyone interested in the new Pinellas Safe Harbor homeless facility to attend an informational meeting tonight at 5:30 p.m.

The meeting will be held at the facility, located at 14840 49th Street North, which is a former Pinellas County Jail Annex II being re-configured to serve as a shelter and social service headquarters for homeless persons who otherwise would be involved in the criminal justice system - a decision met with considerable controversy.

Saint Petersburg, FL - The law firm of Reeder & Nussbaum, P.A., is helping to make sure it’s a happy holiday for foster children who otherwise couldn’t be sure Santa would remember them this year.

The law firm made a monetary donation to Foster Angels of Hillsborough County, which works with Hillsborough Kids to provide gifts for more than 2,500 children in the system of foster care.  The Foster Angels non-profit provides carefully-matched gifts with the wish lists of the children.

On Tuesday, Dec. 21, Reeder & Nussbaum, P.A., will give back to the community in another way.  The firm’s co-founders, Andrew Reeder and Marc Nussbaum, are hosting a free “Ask A Lawyer” Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at their St. Petersburg office, 2201 4th Street North, Suite G. Many times, people are involved in slip-and-fall cases, automobile crashes, or other painful situations and they don’t know whether or not they have a legal case.
