Pedestrian in St. Pete hit and run identified, new info on car

St. Petersburg, Florida -- St. Petersburg Police are looking for a car that hit and killed a pedestrian early Sunday morning.

Police say a little after 3 a.m., a man -- identified Wednesday as 24-year-old Michael Sproul -- was hit by a car described by witnesses as a newer model, black Chevrolet Impala near the north crosswalk at the intersection of 5th Avenue South and 4th Street.

Police say it appears the car tried to stop, but hit Sproul, sending him onto the hood and into the windshield before being projected onto the pavement. The vehicle then left the scene. 

Pinellas County sees drop in crime despite budget cuts

Pinellas County, Florida -- Numbers released by the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office Wednesday show crime last year saw a 5.8% decrease in the most serious crimes and a 5% drop in the overall crime rate.

This marks the fifth consecutive year with a decrease in the most serious crimes for the area, with an overall five-year decrease of 23.8%.

PCSO investigated 17 homicides in 2012, which was one of highest number of homicides in recent years and in 2013 that number dropped to 6, which is one of the lowest in recent years accounting for the 64% reduction.

Stun gun robber strikes again

St. Petersburg, Florida -- The man wanted in the stun gun robbery outside a Tampa pharmacy is also being sought in the same style robbery at a St. Pete ATM.

St. Pete Police say on Feb. 28 around 6:30 p.m. a woman was approached from behind by an Hispanic man who demanded she withdraw all of her money.

He then began pushing buttons on the machine trying to withdraw funds from her account. The two began to struggle and the robber pulled out a stun gun and zapped her in the leg.

'Purple burglar,' accomplice hit two St. Pete homes

St. Petersburg, Florida -- Police need the public's help identifying a burglary suspect wearing all purple.

St. Pete police say the man dubbed the "purple burglar" and an accomplice burglarized two homes in close proximity to each other on the same day.

911 calls released after carjacking

St. Petersburg, Florida --  Two men arrested Thursday for carjacking an elderly woman and leading police on a car chase on Thursday made their first appearance in court Friday.

St. Pete Police say Travonte Banks and Savon Hunter are the men are behind a carjacking scheme that occurred in broad daylight near 21st Avenue N. and 7th Street N.

Burglar burns K-9's nose with cigarette during arrest

Dunedin, Florida -- A 19-year-old man who broke into a Dunedin home was arrested Friday morning, but not without putting up a fight against a deputy and his K-9.

The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office says they received a report of a man breaking into a home in the 1200 block of Belcher Road around 10:30 a.m. After failed attempts to get the suspect, later identified as Ryan Packer, to come out on his own, deputies were let inside by the homeowner.

Suspects caught after carjacking, police chase

St. Petersburg, Florida -- Two men were caught Thursday evening shortly after they carjacked an elderly woman and sparked a pursuit that caused several accidents.

St. Pete Police say around 4:15 p.m., a 91-year-old woman was driving her Toyota Venza at 23rd Avenue North and 7th Street when two men in a stolen black Dodge Ram pickup truck hit her car. When she pulled over, one of them pulled her from the car, and drove off leaving her in the road with the pickup truck following behind.
