Police: Kittens found in man's freezer
Crime, Weird

St. Petersburg, Florida -- A man faces animal cruelty charges after four kittens were found inside sandwich bags in his freezer.

Pinellas County deputies say a woman visiting the home of Rodney Blanchard in the 7500 block of 46th Avenue North discovered the kittens when he asked her to get him a beer out of his freezer. The woman reportedly didn't notice the kittens at first, so he told her he had them in there. When she took a closer look she saw the kittens and tried to get them out, but Blanchard pushed her away and told her to leave.

The woman left and called police. When deputies arrived, they could hear the meows of the kittens coming from the freezer. When they opened the door, they found four kittens inside individual sandwich bags on the bottom shelf.

It was too late for one Calico and white kitten but the three others were alive and meowing. Deputies gathered up all of the kittens, which are about 6 weeks old, and wrapped them in a blanket to warm them up.

Upon further examination, deputies noticed the kittens were covered in fleas. All were cold to the touch and shaking and one of the orange and white kittens were having difficulty breathing.

The kittens were taken to the Emergency Care Center at Tampa Bay Veterinary Specialist in Largo to be checked out and are currently in the care of the SPCA.

An adult cat was also found in the home unharmed and is also in the care of the SPCA. Two outdoor cats were found in the vicinity of the home and were unharmed.

Blanchard, 49, was arrested and is being charged with four counts of animal cruelty and one count misdemeanor battery.
