St. Petersburg, Florida -- A new year apparently hasn't brought a renewed sense of peace to a St. Petersburg community plagued by a rogue arsonist.

St. Pete Police say the community was hit with its fifth arson attempt last night at a vacant home in the 100 block of 79th Street South in the Causeway Isles neighborhood.

The home was recently purchased by Christopher Jones of Clearwater, who says this isn't the first time someone had broken into the home. Jones told police on Dec. 11, he found evidence the home had been broken into but since nothing was missing or damaged, he didn't report it.

And this hasn't been the first time an arson attempt has been committed at this home. On Sept. 4, a relative of the previously deceased owner had discovered someone had tried to set fire to an outside area of the home near the air conditioning unit. Evidence of arson was reportedly found, but police say it appeared the fire self-extinguished and the damage was minor.

In this latest attempt, investigators say the fire also appeared to have self-extinguished with damage limited to rugs, drapes and interior walls.

So far, police say they have no suspects. Investigators will canvass the neighborhood again today and will speak with neighbors about the situation.
