Beach renourishment of Sand Key starts this month

Clearwater Beach, Fla. -- Beach renourishment of Sand Key is about to begin.

The U.S. Corps of Engineers is beginning preliminary work now and will begin sand placement on the beach in late April or early May, the county has announced. The project moves south to Redington Beach over the summer.

Work is expected to be done by October.

The county says the Corps will move more than 1 million cubic yards of sand by barge from 12 miles off shore, then pump it onto the beach where bulldozers will groom it according to design specifications.

Details of the project will be outlined Thursday, March 8 at 6:30 p.m. at the Belleair Beach Community Center, 444 Causeway Blvd., Belleair Beach.

More information can be found on the county's website.
