Workshop planned for Lealman central area drainage improvements study

Pinellas County has begun a preliminary engineering study within Central Lealman that will focus on improving drainage and address flooding conditions.

Residents will have an opportunity on Wednesday, April 4 to provide input on what they are experiencing in the community and to suggest improvements. The workshop will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6827 at 4145 34th Street North in St. Petersburg.

The vision of how to improve the quality of life in Lealman began almost 11 years ago when residents, property owners and business leaders identified a future “vision” for their community. In July of 2001, a “Revitalization Plan for the Lealman Community” was approved by the Board of County Commissioners, and since this time much has been accomplished through the county’s partnership with the Lealman community.

Continuing the partnership with the community, the county is conducting a study that is the first phase of planning for proposed public improvements to be constructed over an extended period of time that will address community safety, flooding and overall water quality in Joe’s Creek. The creek serves as a stormwater collection system for the area as well as a passive recreation park with restrooms, a walking trail and three educational kiosks/observation platforms that are ideal for watching wildlife in the creek.  As identified in the revitalization plan, one of the study objectives is to address flooding and stormwater concerns comprehensively and in a manner that will alleviate flooding and improve the community.

The informational workshop on April 4 will allow residents to comment and ask questions, providing an opportunity for a community discussion. Prior to the event, citizens can visit the project website at www.pinellascounty.org/community/lealman.htm for additional information.
