Mastering the Marina

Gulport, Florida -- This is council’s opportunity; we want to hear what you want to see 10 to 12 years down the road,” City Manager Jim O’Reilly said at the start of council’s workshop last week.

The entire workshop dealt with future plans for revamping the Gulfport Municipal Marina. “Now, we’re talking about the marina lifestyle,” Harbormaster Denis Frain said. He and Community Development Director Fred Metcalf spoke to council, Mr. Metcalf explaining that although he presented ideas brought forth by the community, he presented them only to “prime the pump” for council’s ideas. He cautioned the council to try and see the big picture rather than focus on the mechanics.

Ideas included creating a multi-use space for the different clubs in the marina area (with input from those clubs), public kayak and catamaran launch space, a better bike and pedestrian path between the marina, the downtown, and the county bike trail. Christine Brown, the Ward Two councilperson, came prepared with a display.
