Weedon Island Preserve has new June events

Pinellas County, Florida -- Numerous hiking opportunities continue at Weedon Island Preserve in June. Each Saturday beginning at 9 a.m., participants learn about the ecosystems and early residents of Weedon Island Preserve in these two-hour guided hikes. The hikes along the coastal uplands and along boardwalks through mangrove forests are best for ages 6 and older.

Stingray season is back

Clearwater Beach, Florida -- It's time to do the "Stingray Shuffle" again.

Beach patrols report they've seen an increase in stingray injuries recently.

The city says purple warning flags are posted to warn beachgoers that stingrays are in the water.

"It is important for all beachgoers to do the 'stingray shuffle' when entering beach waters," the city advises. "By shuffling your feet in the sand, you will scare off any stingrays that might be around."

Reduced reclaimed water availability- schedule change

Pinellas County, Florida -- To alleviate the risk of running out of reclaimed water, action is being taken to reduce daily system demands. Beginning Tuesday, May 28, Pinellas County reclaimed water customers will have reclaimed water available two days per week for irrigation in 24-hour intervals beginning at 12:01 a.m.

Ssafety Harbor, Florida -- The 300-year-old Baranoff Oak in Safety Harbor is in trouble. 

The tree is currently fighting for its life and during the week of May 20, the oak tree, weighing over 800 tons, will be repotted by a group of arborists in an effort to save its life. 

Over 100 yards of potting soil will be used in an never before approach to preserve a tree this large.

The Baranoff Oak is located at the Northeast corner of 2nd Street and Main Street in Safety Harbor.

50th anniversary celebration for Fort De Soto

St. Petersburg, Florida -- Fort De Soto is turning 50.

Fort De Soto has been named America's Best Beach, and one of the 20 most beautiful beaches in the world, according to Trip Advisor. 

To help celebrate the anniversary there will be a big beach bash on Saturday, May 11. Activities throughout the day will be reminiscent of the original opening of the park, featuring the Tampa Bay Water Ski Show and special guest, reigning Miss Florida 2012 Laura McKeeman.
