Pinellas County, Florida-- Household residents in Pinellas County have an opportunity to drop off hazardous waste, unwanted electronics and chemicals this Saturday for free!

"Household electronics and chemicals – such as TVs, cell phones, computers, paints, motor oil, fertilizers and batteries – should never be dumped in the regular trash, drains, storm sewers or on the ground," one county official explains. "These products can be harmful to the environment and to the people handling them if they are not disposed of properly."

Florida State Parks announces new, free mobile app

Florida-- Trees, lakes, trails, wildlife- they're all things that come to mind when thinking about Florida's parks. Techonology, smartphones and applications, howeverm are probably the last things to come to mind- until now!

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection's Park Services department has announced the launch of their new, free mobile application, which will serve as an interactive guide for users on the go at any of Florida's 171 parks, trails and historic sites.

Extension help desk comes to Weedon on Wednesdays

St. Petersburg, Florida -- Spring is approaching and so are the many pesky lawn and garden problems that come along with it. For the convenience of residents who want to prevent being bugged by warmer weather, Pinellas County Extension is setting up a lawn and garden help desk at Weedon Island Preserve on Wednesdays through the months of February, March and April.

Audubon Explorer Program to begin

Audubon Explorer Program to begin

Clearwater, Florida -- Clearwater Audubon Society has 12 openings in its Audubon Explorer Program for students in grades 5 through 8, or ages 10 through 14.

They will meet at 8:30 a.m. on Saturdays: Feb. 16; March 9 and 23; April 13 and 27; and May 4.

Members will visit different Pinellas County parks where they will gain knowledge about birding and the environment. This program is offered by Moccasin Lake Nature Park in partnership with the Clearwater Audubon Society.

Pinellas County, Florida -- The popular Saturday hikes continue at Brooker Creek Preserve in 2013.

On Feb. 2 and 16, volunteer guides lead groups to see how the land has changed over time and the ecological footprints left by those changes. Closed-toe shoes, water and hat are recommended on these 90-minute, 0.75-mile walks at 9 a.m.
