Pinellas County, Florida -- It is 47 miles long, has been a Pinellas County asset since it opened in 1990, and is now going to be monitored to get an accurate count of users. The Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail is being outfitted with a series of infrared monitors to tally the number of runners, bikers and walkers who use this linear park.

Pinellas County, Florida -- Being – and saving some – green is the focus of the Sept. 5 There’s No Place Like Home radio show sponsored by the Housing Finance Authority of Pinellas County.

The featured guest is Joe Triolo, program manager with Duke Energy. He’ll  talk about easy energy saving tips, the use of solar power and how to arrange for a free energy audit.

Mosquito Control focuses on prevention

Pinellas County, Florida -- At Pinellas County Mosquito Control, the quest to eradicate as many of the pesky bugs as possible is an ongoing responsibility.

Scientists at the county believe that the focus on stopping the mosquitoes before they even grow into flying biting machines is the most effective means of control. To do so, they monitor and larvicide on a daily basis throughout the county, and fog in locations where it is specifically needed.

Volunteer for Cross Bayou Canal & Joe's Creek cleanup

Pinellas County, Florida -- Help keep the area beautiful by volunteering to cleanup the area. 

Join Keep Pinellas Beautiful on Saturday, September 7 and help cleanup the water. The event begins at 8:00 a.m. and volunteers will be collecting trash in and around the water. 

Volunteers should bring comfortable clothing, closed toed shoes, hat, sunscreen and a towel or chair to sit on during lunch. 

Trash grabbers, bags, gloves, map and water will be provided along with lunch and a free drawing for raffle prizes. The event will end at 12:30 p.m.

September teems with discovery at Pinellas County preserves

Pinellas County, Florida -- Here are the events happening at Weedon Island Preserve in September.

Weedon Island Preserve continues the numerous opportunities available for hikers. Each Saturday in September, hikers can learn about the ecosystems and early residents of the preserve while hiking the coastal uplands and boardwalks through mangrove forests. This two-hour hike, beginning at 9 a.m. is best for ages 6 and older. Advance registration required.

Pinellas County, Florida -- Here are the events happening at Brooker Creek Preserve in September. 

Beginning at 10:30 a.m. each Thursday in September, youngsters continue to be treated to the ever-popular Book Time at Brooker. For 45 minutes, tots ages 3 to 5 connect to the wonders of the natural world through stories and crafts, games or other hands-on activities.

High-tech trash cans come to the beach, downtown

Clearwater Beach, Florida - The city this week has started the first public space recycling.

The Solid Waste Department is installing solar-powered trash compactors and recycling bins on the beach and downtown. More than a dozen sets have been deployed so far, and 34 sets will be in place when the program is copmpleted.

The two-station kiosks will give visitors to the beach and downtown the opportunity to save valuable resources and reduce waste. Recyclables accepted are plastics #1-7, glass, mixed paper, newspaper, aluminum and steel cans.
