Pinellas County, Florida -- Brooker Creek Preserve and Weedon Island Preserve both have exciting events in the upcoming months:

Brooker Creek Preserve

Beginning at 10:30 a.m. each Thursday in August, youngsters continue to be treated to the ever-popular Book Time at Brooker. For 45 minutes, tots ages 3 to 5 have the opportunity to connect to the wonders of the natural world through stories and crafts, games or other hands-on activities.

Gulfport, Florida -- When Gulfport city council debated whether or not to allow PACE (Property Assessed Clean Energy) to come to town, they heard from people who said Gulfport needed the program and people who said having such a program in Gulfport would hurt homebuyers. Council didn’t consider one possibility: no one would take advantage of the program.

Background levels of red tide off Pinellas beaches

St. Petersburg, Florida -- The Florida red tide organism was detected in background concentrations alongshore of Pinellas County this week, the FWD reported today.

The detection was found only in one sample.

The FWC said background concentrations of Karenia brevis was also found in a sample collected inshore of Sarasota County.

Prescribed burn today at Mobbly Bayou Preserve

Oldsmar, Florida -- The Florida Forest Service is conducting a prescribed burn at Mobbly Bayou Preserve in Oldsmar today, July 25.

The prescribed burn was scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m. and end at approximately 6 p.m. It involves approximately 35 acres.

County vehicles drive message home to ‘Skip the Fertilizer’ this summer

Pinellas County, Florida -- Vehicles belonging to the Pinellas County Department of Environment and Infrastructure can be identified by the Pinellas County logo on the sides and doors. But now, certain vehicles in the DEI fleet can't be missed. 

Besides the county logo, seven trucks vans and heavy equipment vehicles are now sporting an environmental message that urges residents to "Skip the Fertilizer" this summer and "Be Floridian."

As a Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services-certified spray technician, he knows all the tricks to keep mosquitoes at bay. Instead of spraying after last week’s heavy rains, he went a more environmentally-friendly way: fish.
