Breastfeeding moms can help set a world record on August 2

Pinellas County, Florida -- World Breastfeeding Week during Aug. 1-7 educates expectant and new mothers about the benefits of breastfeeding to help babies grow.

This year, it's also an opportunity to break a world record for the largest number of mothers breastfeeding at the same time.

The Florida Department of Health in Pinellas County's WIC Breastfeeding Team is inviting breastfeeding mothers to take part in "The Big Latch-On" at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 2 to help break the record.

The Pinellas location is DOH-Pinellas' Mid-County Health Center, 8751 Ulmerton Rd., Largo. For information about the event, call (727) 469-5800, ext. 7623.

In 2012, 25 mothers breastfed at the Pinellas event and this year they're hoping for much larger numbers. There are "Big Latch-On" events scheduled throughout the nation on Aug. 2-3. For more information, go to www.biglatchon.org.

WIC (Women, Infants & Children) is a federally-funded supplemental nutrition program that provides healthy foods to expectant and new mothers and their children. (To see if you qualify, 727-824-6913.) WIC offers Peer Counselors who educate and counsel women to encourage breastfeeding as the best choice to nourish babies.
