Emergency operations center at end of final hurricane season

Pinellas County, Florida -- Shortly after the close brush with Hurricane Elena in 1985, Pinellas County emergency planners sought a permanent space to use when responding to threatening hurricanes and other disasters. This year, with the end of the 2013 Atlantic Hurricane Season on Nov. 30, emergency planners will close this first-in-the-state center, ending its 28-year run.

This emergency operations center has served as the command post for the response to numerous hurricanes and tropical storms, most notably 1999’s Hurricane Floyd, 2004’s Charley, Frances and Jeanne, 2008’s Fay and 2012’s Tropical Storm Debby. The center has also been activated for other events, such as the 2012 Republican National Convention.

Pinellas County Emergency Management will start the 2014 Atlantic Hurricane Season in a new, state-of-the-art facility located at 10750 Ulmerton Road in Largo. The cost for this facility is $81.4 million, with 100 percent of the funding coming from the Penny for Pinellas. Emergency Management will share this Category 5 plus hurricane rated facility with the 9-1-1 center, Emergency Communications and the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.

As the end of hurricane season nears, it’s important for residents to remember that June 1, 2014 is not that far away. Now is a great time to check survival plans, look into storm shutters for windows and touch base with friends and family who could serve as host home.
