Man drowns trying to help kids at Honeymoon Island

DUNEDIN, Fla. - A man drowned while trying to help children who were in distress off a pet beach at Honeymoon Island State Park on Florida's Gulf coast.

Florida Department of Environmental Protection spokeswoman Jennifer Diaz says the man, identified as 65-year-old Alan B. Hall, spotted the children Bryden, 10, Ruby, 5, and Lucy, 4, who were caught in a rip current at the south point of the beach.

The parents, Kevin and Nicole Monahan, were able to grab two of the children and Hall went in after the third, a 4-year-old little girl. According to reports, he was able to push her to safety and leaned backwards onto his back to rest. After a few seconds, he turned over face down in the water.

When Hall was brought to shore he was unresponsive and not breathing.

Hall, of Land O' Lakes, was taken to Mease Dunedin Hospital but did not survive.

The state agency is investigating.

There was no word on the condition of the children the man was trying to help. The newspaper reports rip currents have been strong off the state park for several days.
