Operation Medicine Cabinet: Clearwater | Health
Pinellas County, Florida -- The Sheriff's Office Narcotics Unit is gearing up for its fifth installment of "Operation Medicine Cabinet" with 15 drop off sites throughout the county and one extended program - mobile collection location. The event is set for April 30, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
The event is an opportunity for citizens to safely discard unused or expired prescription medications and is a multi-agency effort aimed at addressing the problem of prescription drug abuse and keeping a clean environment.
The theory behind this voluntary surrender of old medications is to keep them from hitting the streets.
The Sheriff's office has documented how household medicine chests are broken into for prescription pills that can be abused or sold on the streets.
According to the sheriff's office, quite often, the problem is teens who steal medication from moms, dads, and grandparents to get high or to sell.
