Quit smoking now at Ross Norton Recreation Center

Clearwater, Florida -- A free program to help people stop smoking will be offered at the Ross Norton Recreation Center. Participants will meet for one hour for six weeks, beginning Wednesday, Nov. 7, from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.

The class will provide the tools needed to help quit tobacco, and will cover preparing a plan that works; specific ways to deal with cravings; physical and emotional symptoms to expect; effective coping mechanisms; and four free weeks of patches, gum or lozenges while supplies last.

Largo, Florida -- Come join in the fun to benefit HUGS of Florida, Inc. a non-profit group supporting families who are affected by Hydrocephalus.

The term Hydrocephalus (commonly known as 'Water on the Brain') is derived from the Greek words "hydro" meaning water and "cephalus" meaning head. As its name implies, it is a condition in which the primary characteristic is excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the skull.

Opening on Health Facilities Authority announced

Pinellas County, Florida -- Résumés are now being accepted for a four-year appointment to the Pinellas County Health Facilities Authority.

The Health Facilities Authority is a conduit financing authority that issues revenue bonds for non-profit health care facilities, including hospitals, assisted living facilities, nursing homes and hospice facilities. Meetings of the authority are held as needed to consider applications for financing approval.

Applicants must be registered to vote in Pinellas County.

Mounting confusion about United Healthcare coverage

Clearwater, Florida -- 10 News has been flooded with phone calls and Facebook posts over letters sent out to those who are on Medicare and have United Healthcare insurance stating they can no longer use Baycare Hospitals.

Maureen Dabeck, of Safety Harbor, says she feels caught in the middle after receiving a troubling letter from Baycare Health system informing her that as of Nov. 26, certain United Healthcare Medicare plans are no longer going to be accepted at any of the 10 Baycare hospitals spread across the Tampa Bay area. The reason appears to be financial.

Clearwater, Florida -- Clearwater firefighters are going pink this week in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

On Oct. 15 - 17, residents may notice Clearwater Fire personnel swapped their traditional uniform blue shirts for a pink shirt. Firefighters bought their own shirts and with proceeds going to fellow firefighters' families who plan to participate in the Susan G. Komen 3-day walk.

Pinellas County, Florida -- Pinellas County residents can drop off unused or expired prescription medications for safe disposal on Saturday, Sept. 29 for the National Take-Back Initiative Operation Medicine Cabinet. 

The Pinellas County Diversion Task Force joined forces with the LiveFree! Substance abuse Prevention Coalition of Pinellas County for the event.

Medications can be dropped off between 10 a.m and 2 p.m.
