"Paddle to the Party" to fight polio

Tarpon Springs, Florida -- You can help eradicate polio worldwide with just a few strong paddles.

The Rotary Club of Tarpon Springs is sponsoring a fundraiser Saturday, April 9 called "Paddle to the Party."  The race, scavenger hunt and picnic will be held at Sunset Beach, starting at noon.

100% of the proceeds will go to the Rotary International Polio Plus Program.

Pinellas County, Florida -- Help may be available for residents between the ages of 18 and 62 who do not have access to health care.

The Pinellas County Department of Health and Human Services has partnered with the Pinellas County Health Department and Community Health Centers of Pinellas Inc. to provide prevention-focused health care.

Dispose of "sharps" at area medical offices

St. Petersburg, FL -- Patients who need to dispose of used needles can safely drop off "sharps" at hospitals throughout St. Petersburg. "Sharps" are medical items having the potential to puncture or lacerate such as syringes with attached needles and disposable lancets used by diabetics and patients with other medical conditions.

Patients should not throw these items in the trash, in solid-waste containers or in landfills because of the risk of injury and contamination. Also, never snap off the needles or attempt to recap them.

Patients offered antibiotics after therapist dies

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (AP) -- Officials at All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg are contacting the parents of about a dozen children after an outpatient therapist died from a bacterial infection that can lead to meningitis.

To help prevent an outbreak, hospital officials on Tuesday were contacting families whose children may have come in contact with the employee.

The employee, who was not identified by the hospital, did not work last week and officials say they didn't know she was ill until she called hours before her death on Monday to say that she had the flu.

Pinellas County, Florida -- Today,The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and University of Wisconsin released the 2011 County Health Ranking report. The first report that ranks counties nationwide on health outcomes and health behaviors was published last year. This year’s report is available for viewing on www.countyhealthrankings.org.

Pinellas County was ranked #28 of the 67 counties in Florida for "health outcomes" this year, ranked by mortality and morbidity figures.

The county was higher on the list of "health factors," being named #20 on the list that considers health behavior, clinical care resources, social factors, and physical environment.

Largo, FL -- Highland Recreation is seeking enthusiastic Zumba instructors to begin teaching Zumba and Zumba Toning classes mid-July, 2011.

Interested instructors should be prepared to teach three songs during one of Highland's regularly scheduled Zumba classes. 

Auditions will be held at the Highland Recreation Complex (400 Highland Ave, Largo 33770) on Saturday, April 2 at 9:30 a.m. and Monday, April 4 and 11 at 6:30 p.m.
