July 31 Is National Heatstroke Prevention Day

Pinellas County, Florida -- A child dies from heatstroke every 10 days from being left alone in an unattended vehicle. In fact, heatstroke is the leading cause of a non-crash vehicle fatality for children 14 and younger.

On Wednesday, July 31, Pinellas County Public Safety Services is joining a national effort to raise awareness about this preventable tragedy with a Social Media Conversation Day.

On this day, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is asking the public to share safety messages through Facebook and Twitter using the hashtag #heatstroke.

Breastfeeding moms can help set a world record on August 2

Pinellas County, Florida -- World Breastfeeding Week during Aug. 1-7 educates expectant and new mothers about the benefits of breastfeeding to help babies grow.

This year, it's also an opportunity to break a world record for the largest number of mothers breastfeeding at the same time.

The Florida Department of Health in Pinellas County's WIC Breastfeeding Team is inviting breastfeeding mothers to take part in "The Big Latch-On" at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 2 to help break the record.

Pinellas County, Florida -- Avoid the back-to-school rush by making sure your child's immunizations are updated before Pinellas County schools are back in session on Monday, Aug. 19!

The Florida Department of Health in Pinellas County provides immunizations at no cost for babies, children and young people through the age of 18.

Center hours at the locations below are weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Families do not need to make an appointment.

Gulfport, Florida -- This weekend Gulfport firefighter/EMT Chris Mathis was working at his Pinellas Park home when he heard a commotion across the street. Mr. Mathis walked across the street and found a neighbor performing CPR on a two-year-old boy who had started to drown in his own pool. Mathis ventilated the toddler and joined the neighbor in CPR.
