Cougars pull off early season upset over Spartans

Clearwater, Florida -- For a while to start the second half, Lakewood looked like they were ready to prove that they deserved the No. 5 spot we gave them in our WTSP.com Top 10 on 10 list to start the season.

The Spartans only needed two plays to get the go-ahead score in the third quarter, but couldn't hold the lead. Countryside picked up a huge home win Friday night, 15-13.

The Countryside Cougars led 9-7 at the half but it didn't last long. A pair of USF recruiting targets hooked up for a long, go-ahead score. Ryan Davis hit a streaking Jacqui Ellison for the touchdown.

The Spartans picked up two quick sacks on the next Cougars possession. Countryside made a change. Robby Hicks replaced Trent Chemlik under center and the senior led the Cougars down the field for a field goal to pull to within 13-12.

Countryside added another field goal later and held strong on Lakewood's desperation attempt on 4th-and-25 from its own 5-yard line.

LHS finished 10-2 last season and was a preseason favorite for many in 7A-District 5. They will host Palmetto next weekend.

The game against Lakewood was the first of seven games for Countryside this season against playoff teams from a year ago. The Cougars have been dominant in recent history. Even after forfeiting five games a season ago, they still have won 33 games in four years.

But, after falling tonight and last week 22-13 to CCC, the Cougars are off to a 1-1 start. They visit Southeast next weekend.
