The Palmetto-East Lake first round matchup looked like a mismatch on paper but the Tigers almost stunned one of the state-title favorites. Palmetto came into the game with a 5-5 record and narrowly lost to the previously 10-0 Eagles, 13-12.

The Tigers' defense held the Eagles' high-powered offense in check for the first half. East Lake only managed two field goals.

In the second quarter, East Lake quearterback Jake Hudson fumbled and Luis Quinones scooped it up for Palmetto and returned into deep East Lake territory. That set up the only touchdown of the first half - a Sean Allison pass to Simon Williams. George Campbell blocked the extra point attempt to keep the game tied at 6-6 at halftime.

East Lake scored early in the third quarter. Artavis Scott's short run made it 13-6. The Eagles held on to win by one point. It was the closest game of the season for East Lake.

The Eagles will now face Pinellas Park in the second round of the playoffs. Those two teams met as fellow unbeatens in Week 9. East Lake beat the Patriots, 42-12.
