Former Largo QB waiting for next NFL opportunity

LARGO, Fla. -- Marcus Paschal was the quarterback at Largo High School back in 2001 when the Packers brought home their first district title in a decade. He then went off to the University of Iowa where he was a 3-year starter and, after that, it was off to the NFL as an undrafted free agent to the Philadelphia Eagles.

"Football is a part of me, it runs through my veins. I've been playing this game since the age of nine and I think it was instilled in me since I was in the crib," said Paschal.

7-time District champion Largo thumps Tarpon Springs 38-10

Largo, FL -- You might call this one, practice for the playoffs.  The Largo Packers went into Friday night's game having already clinched their 7th consecutive district title.

But head coach Rick Rodriguez was looking for more while hosting the Tarpon Springs Spongers. 

Packers with the back, Juwan Brown finds Raheem Harvey for the 25-yard touchdown and puts Largo in complete control.

Countryside cruises past St. Pete 41-14

Clearwater, FL -- 4th ranked Countryside High School was looking for a perfect 10-0 finish on Friday night as they hosted St. Petersburg. 

Cougars were up 6-0 in the first quarter when St. Pete shocked them with an 81-yard touchdown run care of David Jones to give the Green Devils a 7-6 lead.

Cougars would answer back though, QB Gray Crow tossed a 20-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Rossi to put the Cougars back on top, 14-13.

East Lake wins district title in 21-20 thriller over Palm Harbor

In a game to decide the Class 8A district 7 championship, East Lake dominated Palm Harbor Univeristy High for a half, then the Canes scored 13 unanswered points only to lose the game and the championship on a missed extra point.

East Lake Quarterback Pete Dinovo handed the ball to fleet running back Tyler Lane.  East Lake took a 14-7 lead into the half and Palm Harbor gave them a game. 

Hayford home finale at Shorecrest Prep

St. Petersburg, Fla. -- Phil Hayford had chances to leave Shorecrest Prep.  Whether it was a higher profile high school or college, Hayford's success was wanted.

Then his son graduated and speculation was Hayford would leave the small private school in north St. Petersburg.  Then his daughter finished school.

But he always wanted to coach just one more Chargers' team because he had a connection with the kids.

"You try to figure out what your purpose is," Hayford said. "and my purpose was to coach."

Hayford never left.

Palm Harbor upsets Plant in girl's volleyball playoffs

Tampa, FL - The Plant High Lady Panthers were set to begin another state title run in girls volleyball.

Plant (18-8), the Class 8A - district 7 winner was the heavy favorite against the Palm Harbor University Hurricanes, the 8A-8 runnerup.

But the Canes (20-7) were also ready, as well as relentless and efficient, upsetting Plant in three quick games 25-15, 25-16, 25-12, in the 8A region quarterfinal match.

High School Player of the week

With his team trailing by a touchdown at the half, Countryside running back Diomi Roberts told coach Jared Davis to give him the football.  Davis did and Roberts responded with the performance of the week. 

The senior rolled up 227 yards on 31 carries with three second-half touchdowns, leading the still undefeated Countryside Cougars to a huge Class 7A, District 9 win over Pinellas Park.

Roberts basically strapped his team to his back, and ran with it.
