Jarvis Stewart named Player of the Week

Largo, FL - Largo Packers running back Jarvis Stewart is the 10 News Sports Player of the Week.

Last Friday in the Packers season opener, Stewart scored five rushing touchdowns, leading Largo to a 46-0 win over Northeast.

Head coach Rick Rodriquez said the senior running back not only had a big game on offense, but on defense as well.

"He's a special player, offense and defense. He played well on both sides, but scoring five TD's, that's special for him and the team."

Spongers ruin Donnie Abraham's Tornadoes debut

Clearwater, Florida -- After decades of watching Tom Bostic roam the sidelines in Clearwater, the Tornados kicked off a new era Friday night with the debut of head coach Donnie Abraham.

The former Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive back was an assistant on Bostic's staff last season.

Tarpon Springs greeted Abraham rudely in his first game at CHS. Spongers quarterback Jarret Battyanyi threw what looked to be an incomplete pass to Montel Johnson, but the refs ruled it was a backwards pass. Johnson scooped it up and raced 66 yards for the score.

Northeast no match for Largo in 46-0 Packers win

St. Petersburg, Florida -- Largo ran over Northeast in the season opener 46-0 with senior Jarvis Stewart powering his way to the endzone on five different occasions.

The Packers put up 385 of yards of offense and held the Vikings to just 71 yards on the ground. Largo's defense suffocated the Northeast passing attack, as the Vikings completed just one pass.

Donavan Hale had a touchdown pass ending with an acrobatic catch by Reggie Williams in the second quarter that signaled lights out for Northeast.

Shorecrest wins a battle of Buccaneers

St. Petersburg, Florida -- In a battle of former Buccaneers, Mike Alstott's Northside Christian team was out for revenge when they played Dave Moore's Shorecrest Prep team on Friday.

Last year, Shorecrest blew out Northside in Alstott's coaching debut. But this year, the game was a lot less one-sided as Shorecrest prevailed 21-7.

It looks like the third time will have to be the charm for Mike Alstott and his Mustangs.

Clearwater, Florida -- For a while to start the second half, Lakewood looked like they were ready to prove that they deserved the No. 5 spot we gave them in our WTSP.com Top 10 on 10 list to start the season.

The Spartans only needed two plays to get the go-ahead score in the third quarter, but couldn't hold the lead. Countryside picked up a huge home win Friday night, 15-13.

Largo High football injury rekindles ambulance debate

Largo, FL -- Should an ambulance be present at all High School football games?

You may have assumed they already are, since about half of all high school athletics injuries occur on the football field, but look around and in the Bay Area you'll find they are not present in many cases.

The issue came up again over the weekend.

Largo football player Taj Taylor, the young football player who was not in class today- but instead at home recovering, gave his family a scare Friday night during a game against Dunedin.
