Police: Hit and run crash, man's death unrelated | News
St. Petersburg, Florida -- St. Petersburg Police say a weekend hit and run accident involving 14 and 12-year-old boys is unrelated to a man found lying in a nearby front yard.
Investigators say the 14-year-old boy had taken his sister's 2007 Pontiac out for a joyride Sunday morning on Manatee Drive SE, when he lost control of the car and crashed into a utility pole. Police say the Pontiac continued sliding and came to rest in the front yard of a house on Sunfish Drive SE.
The 14-year-old, along with his 12-year-old passenger, fled the scene before police arrived. Police have identified the boys and charges in that investigation are pending.
While investigating the crash, police say they found 20-year-old Jeremy Davon Mayers lying unconscious in front of a nearby home. He was taken to Bayfront Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
So far it is unclear how Mayers died, but a preliminary medical examination did not show any trauma that would have been cause by a crash. His death is currently being ruled as a suspicious.
