Bicyclist killed after tree branch becomes lodged in tire | News
Dunedin, Florida -- A bicyclist died Sunday after he flipped over his handlebars while traveling down from the top of the drawbridge on the Dunedin Causeway.
Deputies say 69-year-old Henry Ellowitz had started to descend from the top of the drawbridge when a tree branch reportedly became lodged in the spokes of his front tire causing the tire to lock up. He was then vaulted over his handlebars.
Two witnesses stopped immediately and jumped out of their cars to help. When certified nurse Jill Kurtzke and EMT David Rogers, got to him, he was unresponsive. They conducted CPR until paramedics arrived.
Ellowitz was taken to Mease Dunedin Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 5:16 p.m. He was wearing a helmet at the time.
The investigation is ongoing at this time.
