Chamber helps sponsor Discover Center on Caladesi Island | News
Clearwater, Florida - The Beach Chamber of Commerce is committing $10,000 toward a three-story "Discover Center" on Caladesi Island.
A group called the Friends of Island Parks is shepherding the project, and has already received donations from developer J. Michael Cheezem, JMC Resorts, the Sandpeal Resort, Clearwater Marine Aquarium and Ocean Properties, among others.
"The concept for the Caladesi Discovery Center is to allow island park visitors to experience the nature of 'Real Florida,' by observing its wildlife, habitat and topography from an observation tower and learning about the island's cultural history through exhibitions," the beach chamber stated.
The center is expected to cost upwards of $450,000, Two-thirds of that covers construction of the observation tower, and the remainder will pay for hands-on exhibits about the island's history, habitat and wildlife.
The barrier island now is mostly undeveloped.
In 2008, it was ranked the best beach in America by Dr. Stephen Leatherman, widely known as Doctor Beach.
