St. Petersburg, Florida -- Shaquem Griffin, a Lakewood High School senior, was featured in the Feb. 25, 2013 issue of Sports Illustrated.

Griffin, 17, was written about in the magazine’s “Faces in the Crowd” segment, which features “outstanding amateur athletes,” according to the magazine. The news brief mentions Griffin’s interception in the International Bowl, which pits America’s top high school players against the top players from around the world.

Griffin, a safety, picked off a pass to help secure a victory for the U.S. Under-19 National Team in its game against the World Team on Feb. 5 in Austin, Texas.

According to a blog post on the International Bowl website: “The World Team seemed ready to counterpunch until U.S. safety Shaquem Griffin (St. Petersburg, Fla.; Central Florida) intercepted the ball at the World 10. Griffin had his left hand amputated at age 4 but laid out for a one-handed catch to give the U.S. possession back.”

“I just saw the ball out there, palmed it and rolled over on it,” said Griffin, who played along his twin brother Shaquill, both Central Florida commits.

Griffin has gained local and national notoriety over his athletic prowess, through coverage by the Tampa Bay Times, the Orlando SentinelESPN and NBC News.
