Last week to get parking pass on sale

Treasure Island - The $75 beach parking pass in Treasure Island is history.

Commissioners voted unanimously to reduce the price of the annual parking pass to $40 and limit sales to Treasure Island residents only.

Holders of parking passes that had been purchased for $75 may receive a refund of $35 before close of business Friday, March 22nd at Treasure Island City Hall, 120 108th Avenue.

Until this year, residents and Treasure Island property owners paid only $5 to purchase a yearlong pass that allowed them to park in beach-front lots without having to pay $1.50 an hour at parking meters.

Then in December, the city received a notice from the state Department of Environmental Protection warning that if the parking passes were available to only Treasure Island residents and not to the public, the city might lose millions of dollars in beach renourishment funding.

In exchange for those millions of taxpayer dollars spent to rebuild the city's eroding beaches, the state and federal governments require public parking.

For the first time, parking passes went on sale to the general public in January for $75.

The sound of "sticker shock" could be heard plainly.

After further review of parking space inventory, Pinellas County and FDEP agreed to the city modifying its parking pass program.

The city would still meet its public parking requirements for beach renourishment but the pass would be valid in only
seven city lots, invalid in four, and would allow the sale of passes to City of Treasure Island residents only.

The parking passes are valid in the following lots:

Heron Lot, Bay Shore Drive & 75th Avenue;

Tern Lot, West Gulf Boulevard @ 77th to 79th Avenues;

Sandpiper Lot, Gulf Boulevard & 100th Avenue;

White Egret Lot, 126th Avenue;

Sunset Vista Lot, Gulf Boulevard & 120th Avenue;

Gulf Front Park Lot, Gulf Boulevard & 104th Avenue;

Community Center, Park Place & 106th Avenue

Passes are invalid at Black Skimmer Lot, West Gulf Boulevard & 80th Avenue; Ring Billed Gull Lot, West Gulf Boulevard & 81st Avenue; Brown Pelican Lot, West Gulf Boulevard & 88th Avenue; and, Municipal Beach Lot, Gulf Boulevard & 112th Avenue.
