ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (AP) - Voters in St. Petersburg are casting ballots about mayoral and city council races and deciding whether to move forward with a $50 million replacement for the downtown pier.

Polls opened Tuesday morning.

Nearly 30,000 residents had voted by mail prior to election day. According to the Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections, the early vote tallies were more than any other city election.

Turnout is likely due to the pier issue, which has been controversial for months in St. Pete.

There are also five candidates running for mayor, including incumbent Bill Foster. If none of the candidates get a majority vote, there will be a runoff vote later with the top two finishers.
