St. Petersburg, Florida -- They come in sorrow, lighting candles, bringing flowers and shoulders to cry on.

The memorial for 11-year-old Sonia Savage, who died after a tragic accident one week ago, when she entered the street on her scooter at 1st and 58th in St. Petersburg and collided with a vehicle attracting dozens.

On this night, friends, family and neighbors gather to remember her pretty smile and big personality. Many are overcome with emotion at the loss of a young life and reflect on the lives of their own children.

"The first thing I wanted to do was hold onto my son. I mean, any child can make a mistake, but to lose," said a family friend, who then added through tears, "They couldn't help her."

Both the children and the adults at the memorial hold electronic candles so the lights burn bright and can't be be extinguished. It's a metaphor not lost on Sonia's parents, who wish they could say one last thing to their daughter.

"We love you Sonia and we... (crying) would tell her we miss her like crazy," said Sonia's parents.

The Shore Acres Elementary PTA has set up a Paypal account where people can donate to help pay for Sonia's funeral expenses.  You can donate by visiting their website.
