Tarpon Springs couple wins national yard makeover contest

Tarpon Springs, FL -- A Tarpon Springs household is enjoying its brand new yard thanks to Yard Smarts Intervention, a national yard makeover contest.

Melissa and Grant Stephens submitted photos of their yard to the national contest's website and secured the most votes by the April 29 deadline.

The Stephens won a yard makeover, a new lawn mower and pressure washer and a check for $1,500 for additional landscape supplies.

On May 26, a team of 13 people came to the Stephens' home to work on the yard including Trey Rogers, the Briggs & Stratton Yard Doctor and professor of turfgrass science at Michigan State University; a Yard Smarts horticulturalist; nine Yard Smart team members/workers, plus two workers from a local nursery company.

The team laid sod, removed old paintings and replaced them with appropriate perennials, trimmed up existing bushes, laid down three loads of sea shell mulch, created a beach zone in the backyard and completely transformed the entire look of the yard.
