Grand Prix back on track with new sponsors

St. Petersburg, Florida - A fun, family event that spent months with an uncertain future officially gets back on track on Monday.

Workers will start building the course for what's now called the "Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg."

The first concrete walls, tires, and fences will move into place at 10:30 this morning.  And by the last weekend in March -- the 28th, 29th, and 30th -- downtown St. Pete will be ready for racing!

Firestone is taking over as the race's title sponsor after Honda gave almost no notice when it sped away from the role of main sponsor four months ago.

That left perhaps a million-dollar hole in funding for the race.  But the race's organizers found Firestone, plus Cadillac and Chevy, all as new supporters of this event that entertains more than 125,000 people a year.

Tickets are available, including Paddock Passes.

A Paddock Pass lets you roam around inside the garage area while teams take apart and tweak their cars and you can meet all of the drivers.

Eight miles of fencing and 20,000 feet of concrete barriers will be laid out to turn southern downtown into the race course.

Construction should not mean major traffic changes until about a week or so before the race.  That's when some streets will actually be blocked off.

Then the race they call "The world's fastest Spring Break party" will kick off the IndyCar Series schedule the weekend of March 28th, 29th, and 30th.
