Gladiators wring out the Spongers 27 -23 | News
The excitement was in the air once again in Tarpon as the Friday night lights shined brightly for the first time of the season. The home Spongers were taking on a completive squad form Gibbs High. With so much anticipation from both the fans and players, the Kick-Off Classic really lived up to the hype.
In the first half both teams exchanged touchdowns with Tarpon Springs taking a narrow 2-point lead into the half after recording a safety just before the break in action. Both squads showed some flashes of their high-powered offense...but at the same time they each took turns playing their JV players.
As for the defenses in this contest, both squads looked solid with an occasional missed assignment. But they should be primed for a run at the division crown.
In the second half both squads kicked it up a notch, and dug deeper into their playbooks. For Gibbs it was a lateral that sprung a 90 plus yard run...and for the Spongers it was a deep ball that lead to an 80 yard touchdown.
By the final quarter it was 20 to 16 in favor of Gibbs, a lead that they would hang onto as they escaped a close one in Tarpon 27-23.
