Deadly morning crash on US 19

Palm Harbor, Florida -- One person is dead and several others are in the hospital after an early morning crash on US Highway 19.

The Florida Highway Patrol says shortly after 2 a.m., a Dodge Caravan driven by 39-year-old Norma Salinas made a U-turn at US 19 and Alderman Road. The vehicle completed the U-turn and began traveling in the southbound center lane, but a Mercury Grand Marquis driven by Matthew Nichols apparently did not see the Caravan in front of him and plowed into it at full speed.

One person inside the Caravan was killed in the crash. Salinas and another passenger, along with the driver of the Grand Marquis were all taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

The FHP continues to investigate the accident.
