3 arrests in death of woman found floating in lake | News
ST. PETERSBURG, Florida - Police say a woman found dead in Lake Maggiore on Christmas day was tortured and beaten to death by three men the night before.
St. Petersburg police arrested Letrell McKnight and Santonio Smith, both 21, late Wednesday after receiving a tip that the men beat 42-year-old Stacia Kay Berman to death in an apartment north of downtown on Christmas Eve.
On Thursday morning, detectives arrested a third suspect, 35-year-old Darryl Williams.
Police say the men stuffed Berman's body into the trunk of a vehicle and drove to Lake Maggiore, where they put dumped her body in the water near a known alligator nesting area.
Authorities say several witnesses saw the beating and helped lead investigators to their suspects.
According to a police report, all three men confessed. They told police Berman had stolen four pairs of children's shoes from them before the beating.
Each suspect is now charged with second-degree murder.
