A new home for the New Year

Pinellas County may be able to make it easier and more affordable for 2012 to be the year to buy a new home. A program is available to buyers who have never owned a home, have not owned a home in the last three years or are veterans.

The rate for the Home Key 1st Mortgage is currently at 3.75 percent - an all-time low - and is available to first-time homebuyers in Pinellas, Pasco and Polk counties.

Another program, the Home Key Plus 2nd Mortgage, helps with down payment and closing costs. This program is also available in Pinellas, Pasco and Polk counties for qualified buyers. Pinellas County also has down payment assistance for buyers who are not first-time homebuyers. Certain area and income eligibility requirements apply.

To qualify for these programs, buyers must have a minimum credit score of 620, and are required to take a homebuyer education class.

“There is a great variety of homes available and prices are lower than we’ve seen in a long time,” Anthony M. Jones, executive director of the Housing Finance Authority, said in a release. “The low-interest rate, along with down payment and closing cost assistance, provides citizens with increased opportunities to become homeowners.”
