Gulfport offers additional property tax exemption for seniors

Gulfport, FL -- The City of Gulfport is offering an additional $25,000 exemption for an appropriate tax savings of $87.

Pinellas County offers an additional $25,000 exemption for those living in unincorporated areas, for an appropriate tax savings of $52.  This exemption applies to municipal and MSTU millage only, and is based on the total household income received during 2010.

The qualifications for the exemption are:

  • At least one homestead property owner is 65 years old or older on Jan. 1, 2011;
  • The applicant qualifies for or already receives a Homestead Exemption;
  • Total household income is $25,780 or less (this amount will change in January with the annual cost of living adjustment (Note: Social Security income is not included in that amount if a resident is NOT REQUIRED to file an income tax return)

Applicants should bring:

  • Proof of age (Driver's License, Voter ID, or Birth Certificate);
  • If required to file a Federal Income Tax Return: bring form 1040 or 1040A for 2010
  • If not required to file a Federal Income Tax Return: bring bank statements, pension summaries; or any other income documents for 2010

To renew an application:

You must re-apply for this exemption each year (unlike the homestead exemption, which automatically renews). If you received the Senior Exemption last year you will be able to renew by mail this year. A renewal form will be mailed in late January. If all income information is not available, apply anyway! The deadline to supply income is June 1.

If you are renewing your application, you may mail the information to the Property Appraiser's Office, or drop it off at the Senior Center between 9 a.m. and Noon on Feb. 23.

Representatives from the Pinellas County Property Appraiser's Office will visit The Gulfport Senior Center, at 5501 27th Ave. S. in Gulfport on Wednesday, Feb. 23. They will help you determine if you qualify and to help you file an application.

The deadline to apply is March 1.
