Southern Miss headed to St. Pete for Beef O'Brady's Bowl

Hattiesburg, MS (Sports Network) - Southern Mississippi has accepted an invitation to play in the Beef O'Brady's Bowl.

The game will take place at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida on December 21 against an opponent from the Big East.

"We are extremely excited about the opportunity to play in St. Petersburg in Florida," said Southern Miss head coach Larry Fedora. "It is a great area with great weather and we have the opportunity to play a quality opponent from the Big East. We are thrilled about being able to play another game."

Southern Miss finished the regular season 8-4 and will play in a bowl game for the ninth straight year. The Golden Eagles lost to Middle Tennessee in last year's New Orleans Bowl and beat Troy in the same bowl game the year before.

"Five Nights of Sinatra" to celebrate singer's 95th birthday

TREASURE ISLAND -- The late Frank Sinatra would have been 95 years old on December 12, 2010, and Treasure Island is celebrating his legacy with a week-long showcase headlined by the singer's own family and friends.

Starting on December 2, 3, and 4, Sinatra's favorite piano player, Frankie Randall, will team up with Deana Martin, Dean Martin's daughter, to perform a cabaret-style lounge concert. Guests should expect personal stories, singing, and a piano showcase from the performers.

The celebration continues on December 10 and 11 with Saturday Night Live star Joe Piscopo's "A Night of Comedy and Sinatra." The comedian, who was a close personal friend of the iconic singer, will share his uncanny impression and special stories throughout the evenings.

100 festive yachts to line up for annual holiday boat parade

TREASURE ISLAND, FL -- Over 100 boats will be adorned in seasonal lights to sail from The Club at Treasure Island's 48-slip marina at the 25th annual Treasure Island Lighted Boat Parade. The event will take place on Saturday evening, December 11, 2010. 

The Club at Treasure Island will open to the public at 4:30 pm for the pre-parade festivities, which will include a visit from Santa Claus for the children, plus complimentary chowder, hot dogs, Christmas cake, hot cider and coffee.  A cash bar will be available for adults.

This year's parade theme is "Celebrate Our Freedom" and will raise funds for the Edwards Family Foundation, a St. Petersburg-based charity that provides special assistance to disadvantaged children in our community during the holidays. 

Clearwater grandmother charged in baby's death

CLEARWATER, Florida (AP) -- Police say a St. Petersburg woman has been arrested on an aggravated manslaughter charge after she left her 10-month-old grandson unattended in the bathtub.

Clearwater police said Monday that 42-year-old Andrea Wooten was baby sitting grandson Antwan Hill in September when she left him in the tub for what she said was between a half hour and two hours. An emergency crew was called, but the child died later at a hospital.

Police said Wooten showed signs of intoxication and tested positive for the anti-anxiety drug Xanax.

The warrant was issued Nov. 22, and Wooten was arrested Thursday. No attorney information was available.
