St. Petersburg, Florida-- A new Chase Bank branch is open near the Tyrone Square Mall.

The bank at 1280 66th Street North includes a drive up ATM. This is one of several new branches Chase has opened in the Bay area in recent months.

Woman swimmmer rescued off Clearwater Beach

CLEARWATER, Florida -- A woman swimmer was rescued off Pier 60 on Clearwater Beach Saturday night.

Witnesses spotted the woman in apparent distress.

Marine units from the Clearwater Fire Department brought her to shore.

Her condition is not known at this time.

 

 

 

 

Lightning strikes East Lake pastor's home, family displaced

EAST LAKE, Florida -- The Rolen family was home together when lightning struck their upstairs bathroom and melted their pipes, causing smoke to fill their home.

"We had just got home from the Rays game when it hit," said father Terry Rolen.

Rolen is the Bayside Community Church's senior pastor. He has a wife, three children, a cat, and a dog.

"It was two big crashes, the lightning hitting and then the thunder almost immediately, and I was like, 'Well, that was really close.'"

It was more than close; it hit them.

Church of Scientology plans to open building downtown

Clearwater, Florida -- After 15 years since beginning construction, the Church of Scientology plans to open its Flag Building in downtown Clearwater on October 6. 

According to the Tampa Bay Times, the dedication in October is expected to draw 10,000 Scientologists. 

The Flag Building is also known as the "Super Power" building because it will be the only place a Super Power program will be conducted. 

New procedure for 6th and 9th grade students in Pinellas County

Pinellas County, Florida -- Pinellas County Schools is implementing a new address-verification procedure to ensure that parents receive timely information about important topics, including emergencies, transportation, scheduling and school placements.

All incoming sixth- and ninth-graders will need to provide the district with two documents to verify their home address. Parents should make sure their children's schools receive these documents when they return to school this year.

Florida Hospital North looking for volunteers

Tarpon Springs, Florida -- You can help make a difference in the lives of patients and staff at Florida Hospital North Pinellas.

The hospital is looking for people to join its Auxiliary and Volunteer Program.

Volunteers will get to the chance to work in all parts of the hospital--interacting with patients and visitors by handing out reading material from the hospital's Comfort Cart, guiding visitors around the hospital, working in the gift shop, serving food at the volunteer-run Grill and shuttling patients and visitors from the main parking lot.
