Florida Hospital North looking for volunteers

Tarpon Springs, Florida -- You can help make a difference in the lives of patients and staff at Florida Hospital North Pinellas.

The hospital is looking for people to join its Auxiliary and Volunteer Program.

Volunteers will get to the chance to work in all parts of the hospital--interacting with patients and visitors by handing out reading material from the hospital's Comfort Cart, guiding visitors around the hospital, working in the gift shop, serving food at the volunteer-run Grill and shuttling patients and visitors from the main parking lot.

Army helicopter units may move to MacDill

Tampa, Florida -- The Army may relocate two helicopter units from St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport to MacDill Air Force Base. 

According to The Tampa Tribune, the move could bring more than $50 million in military construction to MacDill Air Force Base. The helicopters would also add another form of protection to the base that serves as home to U.S. Special Operations Command and U.S. Central Command. 

Florida company creates bulletproof backpack inserts

PINELLAS PARK, Florida- It's back to school shopping season where you can find supplies in every shape, size, design and color. And this school year, there's a totally new item-- bulletproof backpacks.

"I felt it necessary to be proactive," said Robert Scott, president of Florida based Armous Wear. 

His company is producing specially designed, light-weight inserts capable of absorbing a gunman's bullets.

Woman who tried to run cops over officially charged

Clearwater, Florida-- The woman arrested for two hit-and-runs, and trying to run over Clearwater Police officers has officially been charged.

According to a report from Clearwater PD Friday night, the charges include aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, leaving the scene of a crash, fleeing and eluding and driving while license suspended.

Slight red tide off Pinellas shoreline

St. Petersburg, Florida - Red tide has been detected in background concentrations in one water sample collected alongshore of Pinellas County, the FWC said today.

A second sample found the same low levels of the organism inshore of Pinellas and Sarasota counties.

Other samples collected in southwest Florida this week did not find any trace of red tide, the FWC said.

 

Clearwater woman hits police officer with car

Clearwater, Florida -- A police officer in in the hospital after being hit by a woman trying to flee a traffic stop.

The incident began when a hit-and-run accident was reported to Clearwater Police around 12:51 p.m. on August 16. Three police found the suspect vehicle, driven by Nicole Syphers, in a parking lot on Court Street and began to initiate a traffic stop.

The Safety harbor Marina will be the launch site for the event complete with food vendors, games and entertainment.

The festivities and check-in begin at 4 p.m. and the race begins at 5 p.m.
