Commissioners approve backyard chicken ordinance

Tarpon Springs, Florida -- The issue raised a few feathers among some people, but on Tuesday night Tarpon Springs City Commissioners approved an ordinance allowing backyard chickens on residential properties.

Commissioners voted 3-2 to allow chickens at homes for non-commercial purposes under some strict guidelines:

Gulfport, Florida -- We got a taste of hurricane season right off the bat this year with Tropical Storm Andrea.  Andrea spawned a waterspout that came ashore as a tornado in downtown Gulfport on the morning of June 6. The storm caused a good deal of damage to some homes and local businesses, and felled many trees and power lines as it moved from the beach northward to Clymer Park and beyond.

St. Petersburg, Florida -- Council Member Leslie Curran will hold a public information session to clarify some of the issues associated with the new St. Petersburg Pier called "The Lens."

The event will be held on Wednesday, July 10 at 6:30 p.m. in the Garden Room at Sunken Gardens, 1825 Fourth Street North.

County offices to close in observance of July Fourth holiday

Pinellas County, Florida -- Pinellas County government offices will be closed on Thursday, July 4, in observance of Independence Day.

The courts of the Sixth Judicial Circuit (Pinellas and Pasco) will not be in session on Thursday, July 4, except for first-appearance advisory hearings and emergency situations.

The Solid Waste Administration Building and HEC3 will be closed on Thursday, July 4.   The scalehouse/landfill will remain open.

The Florida Botanical Gardens and all county parks will remain open.

Gulfport, Florida -- For the third time in five years, St. Pete Beach approved its comprehensive plan.

Initially the city adopted the plan in 2008 but a judge later ruled that the city used misleading language in the referendum; the court also determined that since the city had made changes to the comprehensive plan after voters approved it in 2008, it would have to go back to the voters for approval.
