St. Pete budget forum coming up

St. Petersburg, Florida -- St. Petersburg residents have one more opportunity to share suggestions aimed at reducing the city's FY14 budget shortfall during a third city-sponsored public budget forum Wednesday, June 12.

The city is facing an estimated $2.8 million shortfall for FY14, significantly less than the $4.3 million city leaders had anticipated. City officials point toward higher than expected growth in property values as the reason for the decrease. Since 2010, Mayor Foster and City Council have asked for citizen input as they prepare the city's annual spending plan.

Construction closes one shelter for part of hurricane season

Tarpon Springs, Florida -- If a hurricane heads toward Tampa Bay over the next few months, evacuees in Tarpon Springs will have one less place to find shelter.

Tarpon Springs Middle School will not be available as a shelter location until mid-August because of construction at the school.

Instead, the city advices people to these alternate shelters:

  • Eastlake High School, 1300 Silver Eagle Drive, Eastlake
  • Palm Harbor University, 1800 Tampa Road, Palm Harbor
  • Carwise Middle School, 3301 Bentley Drive, Palm Harbor

Gulfport, Florida -- On Thursday, June 6, the St. Pete Beach Community Center will hold a three-hour intermediate photography workshop. The workshop will cover transferring photos to your computer, photography techniques, and photo file management. Participants will also shoot photographs and learn different techniques as they use their camera.

Discovery Playground to undergo redesign

Tarpon Springs, Florida -- Kids in Tarpon Springs won't be able to enjoy the fun at Discovery Playground for about a month, but they should be happy with how it looks once they can get back on the slides and swings.

The Discovery Playground, located at the Tarpon Springs Sports Complex at 150 Jasmine Avenue, will close temporarily from June 17 until July 17 for repairs and renovations.

The city is spending more than $160,000 for the redesign of Discovery Playground. It will include a new "tot lot" for children between the ages of two and five.

Hooper, Polglaze to speak at coalition meeting

Clearwater, Florida -- State Representative Ed Hooper and Clearwater Council Member Jay Polglaze are the scheduled guest speakers for the next meeting of the Clearwater Neighborhood Coalition.

Rep. Hooper will present an overview of the 2013 Florida legislative session, and Council Member Polglaze will give an update on the city's nuisance property ordinance.

The meeting will be at 7 p.m. on June 3 at the Salvation Army Joy Center, 1521 Druid Road, at the corner of Highland and Druid.

The Discovery Playground at the Tarpon Springs Sports Complex will be closed from June 17 to July 17 for needed renovations repairs.
