Clearwater Beach, Florida - The owner of a two-story 27-room motel on the south beach wants to redevelop his property into a new, 75-foot high, 85-room hotel.

The Sea Captain motel on Devon Drive between Coronado Drive and Hamden Drive is seeking a development agreement with the city to let the project go forward.

"The proposal is in compliance with the standards for development agreements, is consistent with the Comprehensive Plan and furthers the vision of beach redevelopment set forth in Beach by Design," according to a summary of the development agreement.

The Community Development Board has already approved a flexible development application with a number of conditions, including that the rooms be used for overnight accommodations only and not for residential use.

The owner would also agree that, in the event the National Weather Service issues a hurricane watch affecting the beach, the property would close and be evacuated.

Final approval must come from the City Council. The proposal's so-called "first reading" is scheduled for January 13th at City Hall.
