Sponge Docks redesign concepts will be showcased Thursday

Tarpon Springs, Florida -- Big changes are coming for the historic Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks and the city is showing off some of the ideas this week.

The City of Tarpon Springs hired the firms Hoffman Architects and URS Engineering to take suggestions from the public on how to spend $1 million in improvements.  The firms will present design concepts based on the feedback they received from merchants, property owners and the boating community.

Volunteers needed to help resident rebuild

Gulfport, FL -- Community group, Gulfport Neighbors,is calling out to volunteers to help work on a very large home project to help a neighbor in distress.

Community Service Officer Robert McLaughlin of the Gulfport Police Department reached out to the community group for help.

On Saturday, Jan. 28, at 8 a.m., the group will be removing old fencing, installing donated fencing, trimming trees, raking, hauling debris, removing an unsafe deck, replacing a kitchen ceiling and more.

Funding available for public hurricane shelter hardening

In an effort to create additional public shelter spaces, Pinellas County is offering capital funds to assist with certain construction features of new or refurbished existing structures to serve as public shelter spaces for a defined period of time. Businesses, private schools and other organizations are eligible to apply for this funding opportunity.

Pinellas County emergency management staff will assist with the identification of suitable structures based on American Red Cross shelter guidelines (ARC 4496).

Pinellas County is in the process of developing its FY 2012-2013 action plan for the Community Development Block Grant, Emergency Shelter Grant and HOME Investment Partnership programs.

A public hearing to obtain citizens’ views on housing and community development needs and the fiscal year 2010-2011 program performance for the grants and programs will be held on Thursday, Jan. 26, at 6 p.m. in the Community Development Conference Room, eighth floor, Bank of America Building, 600 Cleveland St., Suite 800, Clearwater.

Council approves amended beach hotel development

Council approves amended beach hotel development

Clearwater Beach, Florida -- The city council Thursday night approved a revised plan for a new hotel project north of the Hyatt Regency.

The conditions include penalty payments if the developer fails to build the project within four years.

The new building is smaller than one originally proposed, but would have as many hotel rooms.

Because of delays in getting the original project started, the site is presently being used as a parking area.

The vote was for 4-1 for approval.
