Beware credit card surcharges

Pinellas County, Florida -- Contrary to recent news reports that a ban on credit card surcharges ended Jan. 27, 2013, Florida law continues to prohibit the practice. A surcharge is the extra fee a merchant adds when purchasing goods or services by credit card.

The Pinellas County Office of Consumer Protection offers residents the following tips:

Pinellas County, Florida --PCHA, in partnership with the Community Service Foundation, will offer free Household Budgeting Workshops at PCHAs Central Office located at 11479 Ulmerton Road in Largo. The two-part workshops series will be held from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm on Thursday, June 6th and from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm on Thursday, June 13th, 2013.

Attendees will learn how to complete a budget plan based on household income and monthly expenses. These workshops are designed for anyone who desires to save money and gain better control over their finances.

The 30-year, fixed-rate mortgage program is for individuals living in Pinellas, Pasco and Polk counties who have never owned a home, have not owned a home in the last three years or veterans.

Pinellas County, Florida -- For women who have no insurance and are too young for Medicare often cannot afford to get these lifesaving screenings like mamograms and cervical screenings.In Florida, there's a state resource that can provide these screenings at no cost for those who qualify.

Women between the ages of 50 and 64 who cannot afford mammograms and cervical cancer screenings can apply to receive these tests at no cost through the Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (BCCEDP) at the Florida Department of Health in Pinellas County.

Free tax aid is offered Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. It will be at the Dunedin Community Center.

No appointments are necessary but it is firs-come, first-serve. Come early and prepared with all your tax information.
